The Importance of Accessible Design in the Remote Work Era

Published March 29, 2023

The COVID-19 pandemic led to an unprecedented shift towards remote work, with many organizations adopting work-from-home policies to prevent the spread of the virus. While remote work has brought many benefits, it has also highlighted the need for accessible design to ensure everyone, including people with disabilities, can participate fully in the workforce.

Accessible design is one of many essential considerations for fostering inclusive, equitable work environments that provide equal opportunities for all employees. As remote work becomes more common, its implications for people with disabilities become increasingly important.

The state of employment for people with disabilities

Accessibility is a fundamental human right recognized in the United States, and several other countries and by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. But people with disabilities still face significant barriers to employment, including discrimination and lack of access to resources and accommodations. According to the World Health Organization, around 15% of the world's population has a disability, which equates to over 1 billion people worldwide.

In the United States, as much as 26% of the population has a disability, and the unemployment rate among people with disabilities is more than double that of people without disabilities. This highlights the urgent need to address the barriers that prevent people with disabilities from participating fully in the workforce.

The impact of remote work on people with disabilities

Remote work has changed daily life for many people and can provide benefits for people with disabilities. Working from home can eliminate the logistic and economic barriers that can come with commuting to an on-site workplace. And this increased flexibility and autonomy can make it easier for people with disabilities to pursue opportunities and manage their work-life balance in a way that works best for them.

Alongside the benefits, new accessibility challenges have also emerged. Many digital tools and platforms essential for remote work, such as video conferencing software and collaboration tools, are not fully accessible to people with disabilities. This can prevent people with disabilities from participating fully in meetings, collaborating with colleagues, completing tasks, and accessing essential information.

The benefits of accessible design

The accessible design process focuses on creating products, services, and environments that are usable and barrier-free. This involves considering the needs and abilities of people with disabilities throughout the design and development process and letting those needs inform the process and what accessibility features are incorporated.

Accessible design can improve access to information and communication, increase productivity and efficiency, and reduce barriers to employment and career advancement. And it’s not just beneficial for people with disabilities. It also improves the user experience for everyone and can increase productivity, engagement, and customer loyalty.

By creating products and services that are accessible to everyone, organizations can tap into new markets and expand their reach.

Overcoming the challenges of implementing accessible design

A lot of progress has been made when it comes to awareness. However, designers and developers continue to lack knowledge and understanding of how to design remote work tools and resources that are accessible. This can result in products and services not usable by people with disabilities, creating significant barriers to employment stability and career advancement.

Another challenge is the cost of implementing an accessible design. Not every company or organization has the budget to invest as much as they need to build and maintain the accessible resources necessary to facilitate inclusive remote working options.

But third-party tools and resources that are made to be accessible are becoming more widely available and affordable each day. And by committing to adopting accessible design practices and strategizing to create a sustainable implementation plan, organizations and businesses can gradually establish an accessible foundation on to build upon.

Ensuring employees with disabilities are fully able to participate in remote work will not only support productivity but also help create a more inclusive, secure environment for employees.

Conclusion

Accessible design improves access to information and communication, increases productivity and efficiency, and reduces barriers to employment and career advancement. By incorporating accessible design techniques and working with people with disabilities, organizations can create inclusive and equitable work environments that provide equal opportunities for all employees.
