Marking Global Accessibility Awareness Day: Strategies for Building Inclusive Digital Products

Published May 18, 2023

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is an annual event that highlights the importance of accessibility in digital products and services. In today's interconnected world, it is crucial to ensure that everyone, including individuals with disabilities, can access and use digital content. In recognition of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, this article explores strategies for building inclusive digital products.

Understanding accessibility

In the context of digital products, accessibility usually refers to the design and development practices that enable people with disabilities to navigate, perceive, and interact with digital content effectively. And these practices consider various disabilities, including visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive impairments. But accessible design is not only beneficial for people with disabilities. It can enhance the user experience for all individuals.

Many countries have laws and regulations that mandate digital accessibility standards. Failure to meet these standards can result in legal consequences and reputational damage. And regardless of legal requirements, ensuring equal access and inclusion for all individuals, irrespective of their abilities, is the ethical thing to do.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) are accepted as the global standard for digital accessibility. Complying with WCAG is the best way to ensure the accessibility of a digital product. But many broad strategies can be utilized alongside WCAG implementation to build more inclusive digital products.

User-centered design

Adopting a user-centered design approach is essential for creating inclusive digital products. This approach prioritizes user needs during the design and development process, including them and iterating on the product based on their feedback. By involving users with disabilities in the design process, they can incorporate their perspectives and needs into the product. This approach helps identify potential barriers and ensures that the product meets the diverse needs of its users.

Building accessible websites

Since most people expect to be able to engage with businesses and organizations online these days, building accessible websites is a fundamental aspect of reaching them.

Clear and consistent navigation helps users understand the structure of a website and find information efficiently. Sufficient color contrast and clear fonts are essential for readability, and alt text for images allows screen readers to describe them, making content more accessible to visually impaired individuals. Keyboard accessibility ensures that individuals who cannot use a mouse can navigate and interact with the website effectively.

Implementing these features can significantly improve the accessibility of websites.

Creating accessible mobile applications

With the increasing use of mobile devices, creating accessible mobile applications is crucial.

Responsive design and scalability ensure that apps adapt to different screen sizes and orientations, making them accessible on various devices. Voice control and screen reader compatibility allow individuals with visual impairments to interact with apps using auditory feedback. Gesture-based controls and alternative input methods accommodate individuals with motor impairments who may have difficulty using traditional touch-based interactions.

Considering these factors during development, mobile apps can be more inclusive and user-friendly upon launch and easier to maintain as technology and accessibility requirements evolve.

Ensuring document accessibility

Document accessibility is often overlooked but plays a significant role in inclusivity.

Structuring documents with headings and subheadings helps individuals navigate and comprehend the content more easily. Semantic tags in PDFs provide meaningful information to assistive technologies, enabling better interpretation and access to the document's content. Transcripts for audio and video content ensure that individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing can access the information.

Providing accessible educational materials and workplace documents promotes equal access to information and opportunities.

Testing and evaluation

Testing digital products for accessibility is a critical step in the development process.

Automated accessibility testing tools can identify common accessibility issues, such as missing alt text or improper heading structure. But manual testing with individuals with disabilities is also essential. User testing with individuals with disabilities allows for a more comprehensive evaluation of the product's accessibility and usability. Accessibility testing should be an iterative process, with continuous evaluation and refinement to ensure that the product meets the needs of all users.

Regular audits should also be a part of this process. An accessibility audit evaluates a digital product's compliance with accessibility standards and is typically required to verify compliance. But even if your business or organization does not need to prove compliance, an audit can help uncover issues missed by other tests.

Collaboration and education

Collaboration among designers, developers, and users is key to building inclusive digital products. By working together, diverse perspectives can be integrated into the design and development process, leading to more inclusive outcomes. It is essential to foster an inclusive and accessible mindset within the development team, ensuring accessibility is considered from the early stages of product development.

Education and training on accessibility guidelines, best practices, and the importance of accessibility and inclusivity equip team members with the knowledge and skills necessary to create more inclusive digital products.

Conclusion

Global Accessibility Awareness Day serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity in the digital age. By understanding standards and implementing strategies for accessibility, businesses and organizations can create digital products accessible to all individuals, regardless of their abilities. Together, we can build a more inclusive and accessible digital world.
