Employee Appreciation Day – Appreciating Employees with Disabilities

Published March 4, 2022

Most people spend a significant amount of time at work, and Employee Appreciation Day is an excellent opportunity for team leaders to let employees know how much their time and contributions are appreciated. Here are some considerations for showing appreciation for the value employees add to your team.

Be inclusive

Whether your workplace does something special for Employee Appreciation Day, holds regular events throughout the year, or offers some other program to show appreciation to employees, make sure that these events and programs are fully inclusive and accessible to employees with disabilities. People with disabilities are no different from those without disabilities and shouldn't be excluded or singled out when it comes to being appreciated as a team member.

Say thanks

It may not seem like much, but a simple, genuine "thank you" can mean a lot. Being specific is key: if an employee has contributed significantly to a particular result, for example, thanking them for that and letting them know the impact their contributions have had lets them know that their effort is being seen and valued. This can also provide reassurance, which could help avert feelings of insecurity or self-doubt.

Say congratulations

If an employee has achieved something noteworthy or experienced another sort of win, recognizing their achievements shows that you're proud to have them as part of the team. Sharing their accomplishments with others—be that with close members of the group, company-wide, or via social media or some other means of public recognition—also lets others see how much they are valued and could positively impact their career. Just make sure they're comfortable with having the spotlight put on them before doing so, as this may be undesirable for some.

Give a gift

Whether it's a one-off gift or a rewards program, gifts can be a straightforward way of showing appreciation, and many options are available. Gift cards, work-related tools, and unique experiences are just a few. Providing opportunities for employees to choose from will ensure that they get something that they can genuinely appreciate in return.

Celebrate

If it fits with the workplace culture and the personalities of those on the team, a party is a great way to show appreciation for the whole group or individuals. Providing an opportunity for employees to celebrate, enjoy time together, and recognize one another can also help develop strong team bonds.

Contribute to something they care about

Learn about charities, organizations, or causes that are important to employees and consider offering donations or volunteer time to show support for what matters to them. This shows appreciation for them and demonstrates the organization's commitment to its community.

Offer opportunities for growth

It can be challenging to pursue growth and development alongside a busy work life. Providing time and funding to pursue training, conferences, or other growth opportunities—be they work-related or personal—is a way of showing appreciation that can genuinely nurture an employee's sense of well-being, fulfillment, and satisfaction.

Ask them what they want

The best way to ensure that employees—whether they have a disability or not—feel appreciated is to ask. Ask them what would generally make them feel valued in the workplace and what special gestures of appreciation would be meaningful to them. Though Employee Appreciation Day is just that—a single day—showing appreciation for employees shouldn't be limited to one day of the year. Establishing a culture where employees feel included, appreciated, and supported for their contributions and who they are every day will foster a better work environment for all.
