Victim

Meaning

A derogatory term for people who have had certain negative conditions or experiences.

Background

The term “victim” may be seen as offensive to some with disabilities for its patronizing connotations. For example, the Illinois Interagency Committee on Employees with Disabilities declared that the term “stroke victim” was offensive because it is “emotionally charged language that adds the unnecessary element of pity to the person’s disability.” In other words, the word “victim” can make some people with disabilities feel that their disability renders them powerless. An American Psychological Association Style Guide also seconded this notion.
