Auto-Captioning Software

Meaning

Software that utilizes speech recognition, AI vocabularies, audio recognition, language identification, diarization, and context to auto-populate words on a screen that communicate what is being said.

Background

In 1971 the Federal government began significant investment in captioning technology for the hearing impaired and granted public access to television services for its development.

Later the same year, "The French Chef" became the first program to broadcast with closed captions after Julia Child advocated for the technology.
