Assistive technology

Meaning

Assistive technology (AT) can help people who learn and think differently work around their challenges.

Assistive technology can be anything to switch controls, a braille notetaker, screen reader software, magnification software, a speech input device, a white cane, hearing aids and wheelchairs.

Background

One of the first official definitions of AT was included in the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act, which was first passed in 1988, and reauthorized in 1994.  In 1998 Congress enacted the Assistive Technology Act (P.L. 105-394); in 2004, the AT Act was amended.

The term 'assistive technology' means technology designed to be utilized in an assistive technology device or service.

The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device.

Alternatives

An assisted technology device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized, used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
