Support for Families of Children with Disabilities

Mission

The mission of Support for Families is “to ensure that families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need, and the providers who serve them, have the knowledge and support to make informed choices that enhance children's development and well-being.

Services Provided

Support for Families of Children with Disability provides information, education, and peer-to-peer support for families of children with disabilities, as well as the professionals who serve them.

How Many People Reached

Last year alone, 2,600 families consulted with a Family Resource Specialist or Social Worker; attendance at 320 workshops exceeded 3,400.  Parents attended one of its 14 Support Groups and hundreds of kids and families enjoyed one or more of its 16 recreational and social events.

How Donations Are Used

Donations are used for unrestricted program funds.

Project Spotlight

To address the immediate needs of the families that are faced because of COVID-19, Support for Families created/distributed family kits with sensory toys, facemasks, and a resource packet of information in English, Spanish and Chinese for families who do not have easy access to the internet and/or were not receiving online communications and information.

The resource packets included: recipe book for sensory activities for children; guidance for dealing with public health emergencies; tips for caring for oneself and coping with stress; contact information for essential local, state, and federal services; social stories to help teach one’s child why we’re all staying home, the importance of health and safety, and how to manage big feelings.

These resources kits are being delivered and mailed to family's homes.
