Talking Devices

Meaning

Talking devices are augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices that help people communicate. A picture board or computer software system that creates audible speech from text.

Background

The Prentke Romich Company was formed by Barry Romich, an engineering student, and Ed Prentke, an engineer at Highland View Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio in 1966. They released their first communication device, a typing system based off a Teletype machine, in 1969.
