Mission

The mission of Towards Independence (TI) is to empower people with developmental disabilities to experience the fullest life possible by providing person-centered supports, enabling them to integrate into a variety of settings within their community.

Services Provided

Toward Independence provides residential, transportation, and adult day services to adults with disabilities in the southwest Ohio region. Its residential services include in-home and drop-in care, intermediate care facilities and group home settings. Toward Independence offer adult day habitation programs in Greene, Hamilton and Montgomery County with Creative Community Connections (CCC). CCC provides individualized support and opportunities for individuals to be meaningfully engaged with their peers and the community around them. With its Non-Medical Transport (NMT) services, they pick up individuals and take them where they want to go, getting them to the grocery store, friend’s house, day program, or anywhere else. All of its services aim to help adults with disabilities live the best life possible and move toward greater independence.

Number of People Reached

Toward Independence provides support to approximately 230 individuals in six counties across all of its different service types.

How Donations Are Used

All donations are put into TI's Development Fund. Its Development Fund is exclusively used to provide clients with things that they could not afford otherwise. This could be an expensive medication, new clothing, or help with rent. The Fund is also used for other things like helping individuals experience a fun activity that they want to try.

Project Spotlight

Each year, TI and Partners for Community Living come together to host a juried art exhibit that celebrates the creativity and talent of Ohio artists with disabilities with the Art & Soul Ohio exhibit and award ceremony. A panel of professional artists choose 45 pieces from a competitive lineup of applicants. Those pieces are then professionally framed and displayed at the Dayton Metro Library. The gallery is open to the public all of April. An award ceremony is hosted at the library to celebrate the artists and recognize their hard work with over $1000 in cash awards given to the winners each year. Artists are also able to sell their artwork for an 80% return.

Interesting Facts

In 1975, TI was founded by a group of parents concerned that their adult children with disabilities were not getting the best possible care and set out to change that. Dr. Zink, one of our organization’s founders, is the father of Dr. Mary Rose Zink, Associate Professor of Psychology and one of our long-serving board members.
