Mission

Suffering the Silence (STS) is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to leveraging the power of art, media, and storytelling to raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding chronic illnesses and disability. STS works to build impactful relationships within those communities, and to empower patients, friends, and family members to speak out and share their stories. Together, STS believes this act of sharing can and will transform the medical and social perception of life with chronic illness.

Services Provided

Storytelling workshops, chronic illness retreats, photo and film documentary campaigns.

How Many People Reached?

STS stories and campaigns regularly reach more than 15,000 people each month.

How Donations Are Used

Donations are used to fund awareness campaigns and to fund our annual retreats, which provide opportunities for members of the illness and disability community to come together, share stories, push back against feelings of isolation, and build community, together.

Project Spotlight

Trust Me, I'm Sick is a short documentary series exploring life with chronic illness, created with Arlo Pictures. In this series, STS looks at how chronic illness impacts the lives of five individuals in Los Angeles, California. Now streaming on SoulPancake.

Interesting Facts

Approximately 133 million people suffer from ongoing chronic illness in the United States. That’s more than 40% of the total population of this country.

At times, the social stigma surrounding chronic disease can be as difficult to cope with as the illness itself. This stigma can leave chronic illness patients feeling invisible, dismissed, and silenced.

STS wants to break that silence.
