Resources for Employees with Disabilities

Published September 5, 2022

Choosing a career path is can be an exciting part of life. However, for many Americans with disabilities, accessibility barriers often make this process unnecessarily tricky and sometimes impossible.

We review the resources, laws, and organizations that support those seeking employment.

Where to find out what your rights are

Employees with disabilities are afforded certain rights that protect them from discrimination. Here are some resources for finding out more about those rights.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability or qualified individuals. The ADA includes provisions for Title II and Title III entities (State and local government and private entities). The 1973 Rehabilitation Act also prohibits discrimination of employees on the basis of disability (EEOC: The Rehabilitation Act of 1973).

The United States Department of Labor is responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and resolving employment issues in the United States. Their website is an excellent resource for information on employee rights. On the DOL's site, you can find guides to the ADA and Rehabilitation Act legislation.

What accommodations are and how you can access them

A reasonable accommodation is any change to the environment, equipment, processes, or practices that improve accessibility or help an individual perform or benefit from an activity, based on the individual's need.

Regarding employment, reasonable accommodations are adjustments to job environments that allow employees with disabilities to perform their duties. They may include specialized equipment, support, or modification of responsibilities. Here are some resources for finding out more about accommodations.

The Department of Labor (DOL) provides comprehensive information about reasonable accommodations. The agency outlines the legal context for accommodations and some examples of where they may be applicable.

The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is an excellent resource sponsored by the DOL. JAN is a leading source of expert guidance on accommodation issues in the workplace. They also offer free consultations for those who wish to speak to an expert.

Where to find employment

Finding employment can have its share of challenges. Sites like Upwork, Monster, and Indeed are great for identifying available positions, but often provide little insight into the culture and accessibility of an organization. Fortunately, there are several services with a focus on accessibility.

Ability Jobs is a jobs board made for people with disabilities. They have been active since 1995. Ability Jobs helps employers connect with employees with a wide range of skillsets

Getting Hired is a social networking site for job seekers. Its mission is to create inclusive and accessible work environments, including helping job seekers with disabilities find employment.

USA Job Resource Center is a search engine that connects job seekers to federal employment opportunities. The site actively recruits candidates with disabilities and provides helpful information for job seekers.

Where to gain employment skills

Before pursuing a career, individuals may want to find ways to brush up on their skills. These skills can include creating resumes, practicing interviews, or receiving job coaching.

For those who want to build their resume, consider engaging in volunteer opportunities. Americorps is a terrific resource and may even pay volunteers a stipend depending on the role.

CareerOneStop is a wonderful website to find tools for improving job skills. In particular, their detailed guide to job interviews is a helpful point of reference.

The Job Accommodation Network has an extensive list of organizations that can provide services for individuals looking for job coaches. Their recommended coaches specialize in a wide range of accessibility needs.
